This was the first (of two) two-day stops on this cruise. We were both looking forward to seeing Amsterdam again since we had greatly enjoyed it on previous visits.
We had not scheduled any excursions, instead planning on taking another hop-on hop-off bus to take us to the places we wanted to see. In the terminal building, we immediately found some very nice people selling hop-on hop-off canal boat rides. After some confusion, we decided that was what we wanted and bought two tickets. After some more confusion, we discovered that the boat was not leaving for 90 minutes, so we went back on the ship to wait it out. We came back ashore and tried to figure out where the boat was leaving from. Since it was now pouring rain, we got pretty wet until we figured out where to go. We went there and saw the boat pulling out 15 minutes ahead of schedule. We went back to the people who sold us the tickets. They were very helpful, but we wound up just taking our money back. It continued raining heavily for most of the day, so we just stayed on board.
That evening, we listened to many horror stories about huge lines and crowds at the museums we had wished to (re)visit and decided we had done the right thing.
Regrouping the next day we went out to get on tram #25 to take us to the Central Station which is the tourist hub and should have anything we wanted. I was concerned because we had 150 Euros that we needed to either spend or exchange. I figured we could do either at the Central Station. While we were waiting for the tram, the rain started pouring down again, but this time we were determined to go somewhere. After waiting 15 minutes for tram #25, two things happened. The bad news was that we were informed that tram #25 was "having problems" and no one knew when it was coming. The good news was that the rain stopped and it showed signs of becoming a very nice, sunny day. With this information, we decided to walk (with everyone else) to the Central Station. It turned out to be quite a pleasant 20-minute walk.
Since the main thing we wanted to do was a canal boat ride, we asked one of the very nice and helpful information people where to go. They pointed us in the right direction and we immediately found a nice boat ready to go. We had a most enjoyable one-hour ride past some very interesting homes - both floating and regular - and past some historical sites. Once the ride was complete, Adele felt inclined to do a little shopping, so we wandered around the Central Station and found a few shops. Oh yes, we also had a hot dog at an outdoor vendor. The only problem was that the entire Central Station area is a maze of construction sites and very difficult to get around.
We decided to call it a day and catch tram #25 back to the Cruise Terminal. After another minor comedy, we caught tram #25 and rode back to the terminal. The driver didn't even charge us a fare!
I can't say we had a really great time in one of our favorite cities, but as a whole, it was pretty enjoyable.
